ABC Family to Cancel Secret Life After Season 5

The Secret Life of the American Teenager was ABC Family’s first real hit and spawned many of the cable network’s other leading series, but it looks like it may finally be time for Secret Life to come to a close.

As released in an exclusive from Deadline and confirmed by TVLine, ABC Family has plans to end Secret Life at a fifth and final season, after ABC Family airs its next batch of 12 episodes (starting in March 2013).

The drama from 7th Heaven creator Brenda Hampton was the breakout hit that put ABC Family on the scripted map when it premiered in June 2008. It also helped launch several of the next generation of successful ABC Family series. Additionally, it made a star out of lead Shailene Woodley, who went on to land the co-lead opposite George Clooney in The Descendants, a role that earned her much acclaim. I hear the feeling was that, after five seasons, Secret Life has run its course, leading to the cancellation. Season five of the show premiered in June when 11 episode ran.

Although I’m reminded of a certain other show by creator, Brenda Hampton (7th Heaven, cough-cough) that was supposed to end its run but didn’t, going for another season after its supposed cancellation. Will Secret Life fall into that trap too, or do you think it’s really over for good?
