“The Event” is an emotional high-octane conspiracy thriller that follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter, “The Class”), an Everyman who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his fiance, Leila (Sarah Roemer, “Disturbia”), and unwittingly begins to expose the biggest cover-up in U.S. history. Sean’s quest will send ripples through the lives of an eclectic band of strangers, including: newly elected U.S. President Martinez (Blair Underwood, “Dirty Sexy Money”); Sophia (Emmy Award nominee Laura Innes, “ER”), who is the leader of a mysterious group of detainees; and Sean’s shadowy father-in-law (Scott Patterson, “Gilmore Girls”). Their futures are on a collision course in a global conspiracy that could ultimately change the fate of mankind.

Sneak Peeks

And here’s interesting character into, good read.

What is “The Event”?

No. I’m serious. What is “The Event”? Or, rather, what is “the event” that characters keep referring to in the pilot for NBC’s much-hyped but potentially troublesome new thriller? And how much faith should I put in the producers of a show who ask me to trust them implicitly?

Some thoughts on the panel, and the pilot, coming up after the jump…

The broad strokes of “The Event,” which NBC will air Mondays at 9 this fall, are that Blair Underwood is the president (with Zeljko Ivanek in the Zeljko Ivanek role as an untrustworthy advisor), Jason Ritter is a young guy whose girlfriend goes missing during a cruise, Laura Innes is… well, it’s not entirely clear who she is, but she does know something about “the event,” and she says a lot of cryptic things alluding to it, and is there when the pilot takes a turn towards science fiction.

Many eventful things happen in the pilot, but are any of them THE event? Well, that’s unclear – as is the question of how much tolerance audiences will have for a show like this after so many “Lost” imitators with complicated mythologies failed to deliver the goods (and especially when the finale of “Lost” itself frustrated many of that show’s viewers). “The Event” pilot got a huge response when screened at Comic-Con, but then, so did the part of the “FlashForward” pilot that was screened there a year ago, and we saw how quickly viewers lost interest in a show that was all about the mysteries with no substance behind them.

So not surprisingly, the majority of questions in “The Event” session at press tour were about audience expectations for this kind of series after so many others like it came and went quickly.

How, I asked to open things up, were they planning to manage viewer patience given how little the pilot revealed amidst a lot of action?

“We’re very cognizant of the audience’s patience, of rewarding the audience,” said “24″ vet Evan Katz, who was brought in after the pilot was shot. “The show’s really designed to answer questions, to satisfy people, to keep them hooked, frankly, but yet keep posing questions so that once the mystery’s solved, the mystery’s solved. So we’re keeping (some) mysteries open, but we’re solving (others).”

Katz promised that “in the second episode we are very clearly answering the two largest open questions in the pilot.”

Creator Nick Wauters, who was a big fan of “24″ and “Lost” and “Battlestar Galactica,” insisted “one of my main goals was to write a show that could keep the audience hungry but not frustrate people.

“But,” he insisted, “you still have to kind of go on faith that we know what we’re doing.”

(At this point there was some eye-rolling in the room from critics who have heard that phrase a time or 12 in the last seven years, only for the faith to not get rewarded.)

Wauters has been working on the idea for five years, and came into NBC with a detailed series Bible that producer Steve Stark promised included “tent-pole benchmarks we’re going to hit as the
series progresses into even season 3.”

Wauters said with that Bible in mind, we should consider the pilot “kind of an invitation to the series, really. It’s an appetizer. I think as a viewer myself and a fan of ‘Lost,’ I’d ask for people’s trust – that even though I was a huge fan, that’s what I’d want them to do.”

It’s sounds like a DNA rewrite as the planets do their ‘Y’ pattern alignment with the Galactic Core at 11:11am 12/21/1212, no matter what time zone. At 11:11 is when as you look at the Sun the Galactic Core is on the opposite side and everyone gets doused with a whole new kind of radiation that makes you do like Jim Carey did when he put on the Mask. Is that it?

After an unsatisfying investment in ‘LOST’, there is no way I’m wasting my time with this.

Thanks to spoiler sites, I’ll know more than those who watch with much less investment and frustration.

it is very hard to trust people who cant spell tnevE right. I have had it with people who have nothing better to do with their graphics program than to make some letters look backwards The title is made obviously for (and by) people who can even spell correctly. Not for me as it insults my intelligence of the English language.

I didn’t like it. The first 15 minutes got my attention & I was really hoping for something to keep my attention enough to tune in next week, but it didn’t. The replays made me feel like I was watching ‘Groundhog Day’. And at the end, I knew no more than I did in the first 15 minutes. They could’ve thrown a few bigger clues out to keep my interest.

Every magic trick has 3 acts :

The first is called The Pledge. The magician shows you something ordinary. A bird or a man or a jet.

The second is called The Turn. The magician makes the object vanish thru some event. But that’s not enough. They have to make it return to normal.

The third act is called The Prestige. The object that was removed is brought back to existence. Thus the magic or the event.

I really hope NBC has their ducks in a row because just making the jet reappear is not going to be enough. I’ll give them 3 shots. If not. I am going to make The Event disappear on my TV.

OMG. I want the hour I wasted watching this back. Seriously?
    1. How is NBC going to cast Ritter as the main character?
    2. The flash back sequences and scenes zig zagging through time made me lose interest.
    3. I finished the pilot and STILL do not really know what is going on?
    4. This show is going to get canceled.
    5. Thank goodness they had “Chase” come on right after or Monday night on NBC would have been a waste.

Nope. Wasted time with LOST (seriously, lame ass), 4400, Defying Gravity, so I’m not even going to invest my time with televsion anymore. Football and pool with friends sounds like a better Monday night.

The “Event” centers on a group of people (some 100 or so) that traveled to the future. They were sent back and they are the captives you see in alaska. You should have noticed the subtle change in events that occured with the president going to the car. Most likely many people glossed over this..
This was one of the few clues you were given in the pilot.

The “they” that was aluded to are a group from the future set to protect events as they happened.

Weaving together what I saw of the premier with a couple prior comments makes it sound like the “they” are a group having an imperfect technology able to view alternate time-lines and transport items to and from those time-lines. They transported the plane to another place on earth but earlier in the same time-line to prevent the disaster from happening. There is an underground at work that doesn’t like fiddling with the time-line and they set in motion the very incident that the ones in power set out to prevent because it would have caused the technology to have never been created. The paradox in this guess becomes the sabotage attempt to stop the ‘Event’ if it had been successful would have NOT made for this waste of my time. Thus we know it failed but not completely because then the abduction of the girlfriend would never have happened. There. Now I gotta watch.

Thank goodness for DVR. If this is another scifi show then I’m not wasting any more time… I was totally hooked until the airplane got sucked into a time portal. And what is up with the wind blowing and everything before the plane dives for a crash? The writers need to make it realistic IMHO. (NO Aliens please)
