Supernatural Season 6 Renewal Spoilers!

4 years ago, by

February 21, 2010

Another round of good news, bad news today. I’ll start with the good: We’ll be enjoying another year with our boys; the show has been renewed for a sixth season! But unfortunately there’s a caveat: Eric Kripke, creator and benevolent ruler, is stepping down as show runner (along with his co-runner Robert Singer).

What will this mean for the show? For starters, it means the wonderful executive producer and writer Sera Gamble will be taking over as show runner. Plus, insiders insist Kripke and Singer will remain hands-on executive producers:

“Eric and Bob will be working very closely with Sera,” says the source. “They are not abandoning the show.”

But what about the original and oft-discussed five-year plan for the show? That still remains in place, with a whole new round of stories to be told next year after the Apocalypse is wrapped up this season. Here’s what Kripke had to say:

“I’m looking at this season as the [last] chapter in this particular story…That doesn’t mean there can’t be a new story. Buffy did it. The X-Files did it. You close a chapter on a big mythology storyline and then you begin a new one.”

Robert Singer echoed that sentiment:

“Year six won’t have the scope that this season has had. It’s tough to top the Apocalypse.”

So what can we expect in Season 6? Less overarching mythology, more of Sam and Dean’s relationship, according to new show runner Gamble:

“You just turn left and go a whole other direction. The show has never really been about God and the angels and demons, it’s a show about Sam and Dean…There has always been a deep well to jump into in the boys’ relationship…We have the opportunity to go back from the epic to a more intimate story.”

What do you think? Are you looking forward to the back-to-basics approach, with more stand-alone episodes and less mythology? Are you worried about how Kripke’s departure will affect the show? And what does this new direction mean for characters like Castiel, who might not have a place in an Apocalypse-free universe? Be sure to tell your thoughts in the comments below.

I love Castiel, and I will be very diappointed if he is not in the 6th season. He is so much better than any of those other self-righteous, evil, sons of god.

New storyline or not, I am extremely excited that the show will return for a sixth season! I’ve watched every episode since the beginning and will continue to do so as long as it’s on. Jensen and Jared are extraordinary (not to mention very easy on the eyes). Keep those episodes coming!!!!

First of, its not “mythology” its religion. I have also watched every episode and rather enjoy it. However i would be careful about the thin line im afraid the show is playing near. I understand that its Hollywood and not everyone can be happy. but i think it would be wise for the show to figure out a way whether its to continue or wrap it up without offending anyone. Whether they are religious or not.

First off, at Trent- this definition from Webster’s:
mythology- a usually traditional story of ostensibly historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief, or natural phenomenon.
In that sense, religion is mythology. Plus, a lot of the stuff that they’re playing with- angels, demons, etc.- is not thoroughly grounded in any particular text. Almost every religion has angels and demons.
That said, I don’t think anybody has been offended by the turn the show is making. It’s not South Park or Family Guy or It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia- you either get it or you don’t.
I just want them to give me a good sixth season. Truth be told, all this “angel/demon” stuff is wearing a bit thin. I’d like to see them hunting ghouls, changelings, ghosts, etc. because that’s what makes Supernatural Supernatural. I don’t know what more they can explore, but mythology’s old and vast- I’m sure they can think of something not too alienating yet not too unoriginal.
(A side note- I’m fairly certain the show’s creators are religious, and I think that’s a good thing- don’t try to take the middle ground on this one. It’s partially their show, and they’re entitled to take it in every which direction they choose.

I’ve watched Supernatural since day 1 and have injoyed with build into the end of this 5 year ARC. I hope that a 6th season will do justice to its good stories and good characters.

I find the main actors, Sam and Dean (of course) Bobby and now Castiel have great chemistry together. That is one of the reason I have kept watching it for 5 years. I would HATE to see anyone of the 4 leave the show.

I will be so bummed if Castiel doesn’t return season 6, he has made the series so much more interesting for me to watch.

Castiel should get his own tv show….as far as season 6 go, there is more in the legends than the cristian stuff….idk Norse mythology, Greek mythology…the list goes on, as long as they don’t screw with the actual roots of the show, (the boy, the impala, town-to-town). the6 season should be kool

Supernatural is awesome. I watch it religiously! I wouldn’t mind another 6 seasons to be quite honest, as long as they don’t go stupid. Castiel better be in season 6. He’s AWESOME!! I love him!

I will be majorly mad if Castiel doesn’t return for a sixth season. Of course, I wouldn’t abandon the show or the boys, but I would be livid. I think that Castiel, especially since (*Warning if you haven’t seen 5×21 there will be spoliers in my comment*) he’s human now. It would be really cool to see Dean and Sam showing him the hunting ropes. I can just imagine the hilarity. I’ll also be pissed if Bobby leaves because he’s a great character!

As long as it continues, I don’t mind which direction it goes.
I have a feeling Cas will be in it, just not every episode. He said he’s now “new and improved” which suggests he is now much more powerful.
    A great ally to have.
    Can’t wait till Sept!

I am really glad that supernatural is coming back for a 6th season. I love the humour in the show and the heart.
I do like the over arching storylines and there are enough threads left dangling to carry it through for another season.
Loved the last episode- but what was all that build up with the Dean storyline – please let that get resolved next season.
Can’t wait – will be watching the internet for any sight of life on set.

I really just got into watching Supernatural in the last two seasons, (4&5 i believe) and now i’m enjoying watching two episodes in a row every morning on TNT so i’m almost all caught up. As far as I can see, the show has been solid and the build up to “Swan Song” last night was amazing. The actual episode was very good and I think they pulled off a great show. Here is my issue. You can’t do a show of this nature about ghost hunting, demon fighting..etc.etc…and not involve a higher being that would eventually help them fight for the good. So involving, (what else?) but Angelic assistance in the closing season, that would sooner than later bring in the ultimate evil (lucifer) and the Ultimate Good (God) would, to me, be the epitome of the show. In my opinion, it’s as Kripke said, “hard to top the apocalypse” and really, where you gonna go from there? I mean, someone mentioned the norse gods and greek mythology and the like, but Odin (the Norse god) was in the episode “hammer of the gods” and got his TAIL DESTROYED by the devil. As a matter of fact, all but 1 of them got it handed to them by the devil. Greek gods included. So what set of mythological creatures are left to introduce, when the creators of the show put Biblical deity above all the others?
    Nothing.
    Really…
    Nothing.
(in reality, most if not all episodes had something to do with them hunting demons of some sort or another and almost always had something to do with the Biblical hell in one way or another so…the reality is, the culmination was going to be the Christian version of the apocalypse…what else would they have done?)
Had they not done the “hammer of the god’s” episode, they probably may have been able to go into a separate deity/mythology arc that would have been very interesting. They could have done all kinds of apocalyptic episodes in every mythological way. Of course that would have gotten stale and old and the viewership would have drastically decreased.
So lets be real. The 66 seals, lilith, the horsemen stories, the zachariah stories, the Michael vs. lucifer stories….they were phenomenal! It just worked. The build up from the beginning of the show until last nights episode was unbelievably great. I think that had last nights episode been the SERIES finale, it would have ended a little differently but in all been one of the greatest series finales since “Angel”. (which by the way had the greatest series finale of ALL TIME.)
My concern is, with all the little jobs…leading to the big jobs, then the demon hunting…and the angel fighting…the build up from day one til the stoppage of the apocalypse now….what could you possibly do to make the sixth season better…. I’m not gonna lie, i’m gonna watch, until i can’t, but I honestly think… watching the last season…. IF they plan to just deal with the relationship between Sam and Dean and not deal with any more “religious” undertone….if they are going back to job to job without any repercussion from sending Michael into the cell along with lucifer…or they just deal with it in the first 2 or 3 episodes and the rest of the season goes back to a job to job thing without a true string that eventually leads them to God himself…I have to be honest, it will be like watching the final episode of Charmed on TNT in the morning and waking up the next morning just to start the series from the beginning all over again. You enjoyed it…but…..yeah…i dont wanna do that.

I have mixed feelings for bringing back supernatural for a 6th season. I love the show, but in my experience to keep shows going just to appease the people and keep lining your pockets with money is usually disappointing in the end.

After reading all of your comments, I was thinking… Am I the only one to think about Death playing a main part in the next season? If I’m not mistaken, he did say in 5×21 that he was very old, perhaps older than God, and that in the end, he’d reap him too. New storyline?

And yeah, I want Castiel to be in the next season. Gotta love his comments that seem too obvious to us, and yet so hard to understand for an angel, right? Mr Obvious is real funny IMO.

yeh i want a 6th series and cas duz need to come bck but … dean and sam wnt meet each other for a while cuz sam wnt desturb him from the chance of having a normal life so unless lisa and ben die or something then i cnt see how they will be re-united. I want it to carry on though cuz there are still a number of storyline possibilities and yeh they cant get much bigger than the apocolypse but do they really need to ? And anyway, they still need to mention why and how sam got out, and about castiel and where god was etc. theres ALOT of questions to answer . If Sam came back dont u think adam would have to ?

Im ecstatic to find out theres another season of supernatural…Ive been a follower since day 1..and I will continue to watch until they are done makin the show. (gotta love the eye candy) I hope Cas is still in it..just like someone had previously said…it would be awesome and entertaining for him to hunt with Sam and Dean….HOWEVER I dont know if I’d want them to bring back Adam.. a third Winchester?? Dont know about that one..Im also kinda thinking that they will keep Lisa and her child in it otherwise why would they make Dean go to her at the end of season 5?? Well…nobody knows what exactly will happen in season 6th or who will be in it but I can’t wait to see what they have in stores for it…and on that note..it sucks that Kripke will no longer be writing the episodes but hopefully Sera will be just as good.. as I said..Im a die hard fan and I’ll stick by it until the end. And to C…whats wrong with the way Charmed ended?? (yes I am and was a Charmed fan as well) …..I think it was a great ending.. :)

liz, I had NO problem with the way Charmed ended. I thought it was a cool series finale. I’m just saying that in the mornings when they play the 2 episodes back to back, their playing the entire series. And as good as the very last one was, it always is like a balloon popping when you watch, Piper, Phoebe and Page one day all grown up with kids and all that, and then see in the very next episode (sometimes in the same day) PRUE, Piper and Phoebe, 7 years younger starting from the very beginning of the series. I was equating that to the Supernatural series, saying that yeah, as much as I’d love to see a season six, if they make it a case by case storyline again after having stopped the apocolypse without going back into it SOMEHOW….repercussions for having trapped Michael/Adam…(they HAVE to bring back Adam)….the Death angle….all of that….it would be like having started the series all over again. thats all.

By the way….though it was a good ending….I still hold fast to the fact that ANGEL was the GREATEST SERIES FINALE OF ALL TIME! lolol
    ;)

Season 6 HAS to start another arc – one involving MEG.

The final episodes have not aired here in Australia yet, so I have had to download them online and watch them. They were great. The finale was ‘odd’. I think the first 2/3rds of the episode was intense, best ever, but the ending seemed rushed. Still I loved it, and think that Eric and the team did a great job.

I can’t wait for season 6, I never want the show to end no matter how lame it gets. But I think they need a new story arc. There has to be an ultimate goal. Season 6 does not need to be all about the new arc. Build into the new arc slowly this season, with plenty of weekly monster episodes in season 6, but aim for another 5 year story arc. Or maybe, given that you can’t top the apocalypse, it could be a shorter 3 year arc.

I don’t think Death will play a role in Season 6. He has been set free and Dean, Sam and Earth are nothing to him. The Anti-Christ could play a role. But I am thinking more along the lines of Meg.

Meg, angry that the boys sent the devil back to the pit decides to take her revenge. She kills Lisa and her child and Dean seeks revenge.

Castiel HAS to come back. Not weekly but there needs to be at least 6 Castiel episodes every season from now on. I like him better than Bobby and Sam.

I think Sera will do a great job. I doubt that Eric Kripke would have done another good season. I think he’s great, but finishing such an epic story would have taken it out of him, and I think a fresh motivated driving force is now needed.

Ok so I really dont like the idea of back to basics. I think that if they get to into their feelings and relationship stuff the show will lose what it has. And thats a cool factor. If I wanted to watch bad drama I would watch soap operas. The show is called SUPERNATURAL lets keep it that way. And Cas will have a part we all know it. but he may not be around very much and thats fine. And we all knew bobby was coming back cuz in the finale it said they would see eachother again just not for a while. I guess I just hope the show doesnt lose its touch you know………

Ok so I really dont like the idea of back to basics. I think that if they get to into their feelings and relationship stuff the show will lose what it has. And thats a cool factor. Don’t think it would actually count as mythology, but it was offensive in the way that the devil was made to look good. I’m pretty sure people can’t just ignore that aspect unless they watched the finale (& the eps leading up to it) and realized Lucifer was after all just evil. IMO they can’t really ignore the “religious” undertone they’d got going on this season. That’s the allure of the sixth season. Death is still out there, and Sam too. I suppose that was Sam and not the Devil. It’ll be interesting to see how things are, b/c Sam was apparently strong enough to even trump the devil. Ego boost or something? :P And Sam has to come back anyways, wouldn’t be much of a reward to rot in hell.
Speaking of which, here’s the biggest way in which the show could’ve been offensive. God is believed to be All-Knowing, All-Seeing, All-Hearing, so basically “God has left the building,” “Crap-ass dad” and the likes stating that God just up and left and left the control over to the angels, doesn’t make sense whichever way you put it. Either there’s a god, or there isn’t. If there’s a God, then He knows all. Meh, I was slightly offended in the beginning but then I realized it’s just a show, and that was just to lend another angle to the story so what the heck :)

@AshleyHalliwell that WOULD be hillarious to see Dean and Sam show Cas the hunting ropes, but as we all saw in the season finale (SPOILER) Cas is an angel again, so that would be very weird
Very excited for season 6! I just started watching this year and I would be sad if i came in on the tail end of it.

    Go go season 6! =)

Supernatural ….wooh its very rocking here.i’ve always liked it since the very beginning.i’ve watched every single episodes since the finale battle between the angels and demons or dean and sam.every episodes marked a place in my heart it revealed another reality of real mythology of religion.

I’M impatient about the next season 6, i would wana it be more spicy with more ghost thing, creatures of the darkside, vampires, more angels with more superpower things…..and ofcourse i wana castiel to really be back in season 6. and with more explanation of how sam escaped from hell?if its really the old sam or a new pityless sam (lucifer who slept deeply in his soul) who camed back or castiel & bobby be revived and by whom?GOD and if its him whose is he really as human vessel?if he’s CHUCK or not? well all of this must be mention…….

or they may make 2 or 3 episodes based on the escapade from the apocalyptic world and continue the broken relationship of the two cute brothers dean and sam. sam may leave dean to live his life with lisa& ben and continue hunting alone but uncautiously brings dean leaving lisa to go back to the hunting party with sam cas bobby or by creating a new female character whose dean’s real love and may invent that she has the secret of containing lucifer’ death and that she has a dormant angel who has god on her back side and that chuck was only protecting that female character from being found by lucifer as she could hold his death.thus sam and dean would join her along with castiel hunting. as slowly dean and her falls in love with each other BUT they cant accept it as they are bound by her virginity not to cross the line of sex if they want……and if doing so could result god wrath……on the couple and sam disagree with this relationship though he would really want it to happen but can’t as lucifer is rising back in him more powerful than ever and the only one who can stop that can be that female character, so dean will have to keep his desire for her away and give way to god to eliminate lucifer forever……….

Well……..that are just suppositions of mine how they could start it and so on.but can’t stop myself of imaginating how the 6 season would look like. i would really want that supernatural not to stop with just a six season but to continue to 3 or4 arc….well see you soon supernatural boysssssssss.

I really hope that they do continue the series with a sixth season. I want to see how things with Dean and Sam go…

*SPOILERS FOLLOW, if you haven’t seen all of Season 5!!!*
Especially after seeing Sam (as a vessel for Lucifer still?) outside of Lisa’s house when Dean was there at the end of the last episode in Season 5. I’m so curious and excited. I can hardly wait to see what happens! I’m also sure that Dean isn’t going to just completely give up on Sam and let him stay in Hell.

I’d also like to see where things go with Cas now that he’s basically the “New Sherrif in town” because of Michael being stuck in Hell. I can’t wait to see what new powers, if any, he has. I’m not completely sure how they’ll fit Castiel into the story after the Apocolypse, but I know that they’ll figure out something. He probably won’t be in every episode, but I think he will be in the new season somehow.

As far as where they can go with the show now that they have gotten past the Apocolypse… It’s kind of in my mind that when Sam was outside of Lisa’s house, he was still being possessed by Lucifer. It looked to me like he may have been ready to go after Dean, though it was kind of hard to tell for sure what was going on in that moment. Anyway, I do see a lot more coming out of that. PLUS… I noticed that no one else has mentioned the thing with Chuck. I have a feeling that the whole thing there could’ve been that CHUCK WAS GOD, maybe? I hope that that topic gets covered in the next season, also.

Lastly, I would like to see Bobby getting back into all the action, now that he has the ability to walk again. On that note, I’d also like to see what happens with his soul and the contract. Will he get his soul back now, or does he still have to wait because of something else that might be going on? I’m sure I’m not the only one who would like to see what happens with that.

Well, those are my thoughts for now. I guess we will all just have to be patient and see what comes to us with Season 6. I know I, for one, feel like it’s not going to be able to come soon enough!

i really dont want lisa and ben to become huge characters. i love it being just sam, dean, castiel and bobby. i also dont want the relationship between sam and dean to change all because dean has been able to live a normal life for awhile. i loved it being the two of them against the world. i would hate for this whole lisa and ben family thing to get involved. supernatural has been working and getting its viewers for as long as it has because of the way it is, people like watching sam and dean on the road fighting off evil, with the help of bobby and cas of course….thats just the way its supposed to be.

I don’t see how you can go in another direction? There is too much still present due to the entire apocalypse. I don’t know……..

The show’s care is changing hands… it’s like taking Helio Castroneves out of the open wheel racer and putting the owner in the driver’s seat… not the same race.

see cuz erm … sam’s alive and sam wanted dean to LIVE a normal life so he’s not actually gonna interupt that is he ? so what’s he gonna do and how are they gonna get back together hunting again ? will bobby or castiel tell dean ? i want sam and dean to be like they were in series 1 where they played pranks on each other and dean would randomly flirt and eat … ALOT, and sam would kinda be determined to do something other than drink demon blood.
I can’t wait for series 6 but Chuck wasnt God he was a profit it sas that . they’ll definately hav to explain some stuff though like God and Sam, Adam and whether he got out too, how sam managed to get out, lucifer and michael. I want it to go back to the first couple of series though u kno the simple stuff thats intense but not too like ‘oh my god’ , it needs to be simpler way way simpler like series 1-3 . bobby needs to hunt more often with the boys too and i dnt want adam bck much either he kinda annoyed me a little but i want to see castiel again and want to know his job nd role now with the new heaven sheriff person.

I think sam, dean, bobby an cas will all be in season 6. But if you remember Dean thought that was his kid… maybe she lied… maybe he’ll tie in to it somehow… maybe hes the stop of the apacolypse or starts something new…. and adam goes in to that? They left alot of thing unknown in the finale which means they have alot of room to keep it going but still keep the meaning to it.
