Wednesday's episode of Riverdale was a big one for Cheryl after being assaulted (almost) by Veronica's ex, Nick.
In other saddening events, Betty also broke up with Jughead in the same hour. So what's next?
Exec producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke with Variety to give fans a preview, keep reading for the spoilers..
On what's next for Cheryl:
That started as a one episode story. We were going to be done with Nick in episode 5, but 1) the actor who plays Nick — Graham Phillips — is excellent, I think, and 2) we thought, “Wow, this is actually a huge, deep story that can continue for not just Cheryl but Veronica, their parents, and Archie.” So far, it’s something we’ve been tracking through the rest of the season.
On how Bughead's breakup will impact them moving forward:
Betty and Jughead being apart for whatever reason, for however long, will affect them both deeply — deeply. I think [those two things] are very, very intertwined, to be honest.
Star Cole Sprouse, meanwhile, explained that lip action between Jughead and Toni on Wednesday's hour. Speaking with TV Line, the actor said:
[I] initially thought Jughead should push her away, but then he decided it would be more interesting if he didn’t, and he actually somewhat enjoyed the admiration of another young woman, which I think is quintessentially the most teenage thing to do… I don’t necessarily even think it’s sexual, so to speak. Even if it’s platonic, it’s something that’s brand-new, uncharted territory for him, and he feels excited by it.
