“I’ll be less nervous if you smile.”
So says the girl in the passenger seat. You might remember the casting call spoilers for episode 18 of Modern Family, “Fears” – Haley learning how to drive. Now we also have some spoilers for the episode via a casting side for “Jenkins”, the driving instructor.
So what is it about Jenkins that Haley can’t stand? Allow Haley to tell us herself:
HALEY
The first two times I took my driver’s test, I got the meanest guy. He never smiled. Not once. I’m very cute, I’m used to people smiling at me.
Okay, so he’s mean. Because he doesn’t…smile. Fair enough. Haley’s terrified she’s going to get this mean ol’ driving instructor again, but she’s hoping, just hoping…that she doesn’t:
The DMV examiner, JENKINS, a large, intimidating man, exits the building carrying a clipboard.
HALEY
Oh, no, it’s him.
He walks toward them.
HALEY (CONT’D)
Please don’t be for me, please don’t be for me.
JENKINS walks right past and Haley breathes a sigh of relief.
HALEY (CONT’D)
Oh, thank god.
But then Jenkins doubles back and approaches:
JENKINS
Well, come on, I don’t have all day.
But it’s a matter of what goes on in the car that determines your fate, and Haley is no exception to that rule:
HALEY
I really want my license. I’ve practiced a lot, I swear.
JENKINS
You gonna drink and drive?
HALEY
No, sir.
JENKINS
You gonna text and drive.
HALEY
No, sir.
JENKINS
All right, let’s start this the beginning.
HALEY
Could you smile first?
JENKINS
What?
HALEY
I’ll be less nervous if you smile.
Drink and drive? Never. Text and drive? We’ll see.
Just kidding.
But really, if only everybody’s driving test was that simple.
