And Jaden and Ella were doing so well....
Back in May co-creator Steve Levitan and the rest of the Modern Family crew were tossing the idea around of possibly recasting Baby Lily for their upcoming third season, to slowly evolve her character into less of the quiet, deadpanning infant and more of the talkative toddler (but hopefully, still deadpanning). We want to make this realistic, right?
“At some point, Lily has to stop being a silent baby and has to become a little girl – a laughing, acting little girl,” explained Levitan. “We all may determine that as gorgeous and sweet as Jaden and Ella [Hiller] are, it’s not what they signed up to do or what they love. Maybe they don’t love to be on a set and have to listen to us do a scene 10 times. Maybe they would be happier being kids."
In the past two seasons, Baby Lily was portrayed by twins Jaden and Ella Hiller, and now it's finally been confirmed that the girls will be succeeded by a new "toddler" Lily this fall in season 3. An "Asian, 3-to 4-year-old daughter of Mitchell and Cameron" (and a series regular), according to the casting notice.
And we could be seeing more than just one new face in the Pritchett-Tucker house come this season. Steve Levitan talks on Mitchell and Cameron's urge to have another: “Every good show evolves. We don’t want it to feel stagnant. This just seems like a logical thing for their characters to investigate. But you can’t assume anything, because we hope there will be a lot of twists and turns.”
What are your opinions on the Lily recasting? I'm all for doing a Lily update, but boy will I miss the old silent, stony-faced (deadpanning) Lily. Here's hoping they'll work that into her character's personality this season. Let's discuss in the comments!
