Now that the mother has finally been revealed after all these year, creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas answered some burning questions on what the show has up its sleeves for season 9. Check out what they had to say below..
Why reveal the mother now? Bay spoke on the very issue, stating that "One of our hard and fast rules [when we thought we were doing eight seasons] was that we didn't want to meet her until the very end. We felt like, now that we’re doing another year, let’s find an interesting new twist". Whilst Thomas said "We were scared of it for a long time, but this past season, it came up, and it just fit in so well". Bays further added that "We didn't want to do season 9 unless we had something that just got us really excited to write it. This concept got us very excited to write it and lent itself to a lot of great ideas that came out." and added that "the idea of getting to know her, getting to know where she’s coming from, it became too tantalizing to pass up".
On surprising the fans.. Thomas shared his thoughts on revealing the mystery early "A lot of viewers have given up on meeting the mother prior to the final episode". He also added that "A lot of people think they got another year; we’re never going to see her face this year.” I think the way that the season ends, I’m hoping it will blow some people’s minds and surprise them and make them want to tune in and see what the hell we’re going to do with that.
The mother as a regular next season.. It has been confirmed that Cristin Milioti will be a series regular for the final season.
Season 9's new focus.. The show will focus on “the epic story of the longest wedding weekend ever.” CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler confirmed to TVLine that Season 9?s entire run will span the wedding weekend and just the wedding weekend, as the show will focus on “how each character, before Ted, meets the mother. So, they each meet her independently before he does.”
How I Met Your Mother will return for it's ninth and final season September.
What do you think of the show's new direction? Could this all be a trick on fans? And just who will be lucky enough to meet the mother first?
