Desperate Housewives Scoop: Teri Hatcher Thinks ‘Spoiler Death’ Was A Bad Idea

The tragic happening last night on Desperate Housewives devastated all fans worldwide. James Denton’s character as Mike Delfino, the friendly plumber on the lane was unexpectedly gone too soon. His onscreen behalf however, Teri Hatcher who plays Susan Delfino, is more than heartbroken about his loss. EW had interviewed Teri Hatcher where she told us about her mournful thoughts behind this unfortunate ending.

James Denton didn’t seem to have a problem with his character, Mike Delfino, being killed off in last night’s episode of Desperate Housewives. “It’s actually brilliant,” Denton told EW, of the way Mike was shot in retaliation by a loan shark. “As an actor, you just hope people care.”
But Teri Hatcher — who plays his on-screen wife Susan — isn’t so easy-breezy about the death. “I’ve got to be honest,” she told EW, “I think it was a bad idea.”
So bad, in fact, that Hatcher approached the show’s producers about making Mike’s shooting a veil for something more. “When I heard about the plan of his death, I pitched a story idea that in the finale he would be in an airport in Bolivia and MJ and I would run into his arms and discover the whole thing had been some undercover witness protection program,” Hatcher says.
Unfortunately, the idea didn’t stick, and Hatcher’s Susan will likely end the series much the same was she began it — single. “It’s sad to me that Susan, who started the series as a single, unloved mother, ends now in the same way,” Hatcher says. “I always thought the audience wanted to see Mike and Susan finally happy and safe but that place did not sustain itself for [Desperate Housewives creator] Marc [Cherry] or ABC, I guess.”

Just by way of general observation, every dog has it’s day. The Brits outshine at projects like Downton Abbey and Upstairs Downstairs, but when the US pulls out something like Desperate Housewives (or Friends and Frasier), nobody can even get close. I confess to watching DHW. now, not just for a regular injection of the delectable Gaby, but because the ongoing plot and dialogue between the characters is excellent.

I never liked Cherry. He would have killed off Ricky on I Love Lucy and leave Lucy and Little Ricky without a husband and dad, if he thought the death would bring in higher ratings.
